Sri Lanka may have gone down in the first Twenty20 International (T20I) but unlike the Test matches, they actually have a few things to build from. The reduced gulf - to an extent - between the two teams due to the (ultra) shortened game at Centurion, combined with South Africa's inexperienced line-up could offer the visitors an opportunity at some point. It will come down to whether they are game enough to take it.
While the bowling was put to the sword by David Miller in the ten-over clash, Niroshan Dickwella came up with his own reply to get Sri Lanka off to a flier. However, the target of 127 was such that even a stutter would have derailed the chase, and that's exactly what happened. But the heart they showed must have given them some belief. Things won't get any easier with the ball though, as they are next up at the Wanderers on Sunday (January 22), a venue which is known to produce run-fests.
Lasith Malinga's absence means that Sri Lanka don't have any yorker specialists. Nuwan Kulasekara often strives to fulfill that role but his lack of pace spares him no slack, as when his deliveries are only a little off the mark, which pacier bowlers might get away with, they are punished. Angelo Mathews clearly doesn't come across as a death bowler and Nuwan Pradeep took a hammering as well in the first T20I. So who do they turn to? Things do look grim.
What may make things even tougher than they already are, is the reputation of the Wanderers. In the last 5 T20Is played here, the total of 200 has been crossed five times. In the most recent game, Australia even ran down South Africa's total of 204. So there promises to be no respite for the bowlers. Sri Lanka may want to look at the left-arm chinaman of Lakshan Sandakan to break the monotony of their attack and maybe hope to contain through deception.
For South Africa, the relatively senior pros in Miller and Farhaan Behardien thrived under the extra responsibility in the last match. One also couldn't really make a proper assessment of their top-order in the previous game. In the bowling department, Imran Tahir is a huge player for them and has been a proven performer in this format. It wouldn't be wrong to conclude that he turned the game at Centurion with his double strike. Lungisani Ngidi stepped up on debut, providing great support. South Africa do have the momentum of a winning team which also allows them the freedom to play without any inhibitions.
When: South Africa v Sri Lanka, 2nd T20I on January 22 at 18.00 IST (14.30 local)
Where: The New Wanderers, Johannesburg
What to expect: We may get lucky with the weather at a time when there is reasonable rainfall in Johannesburg. The forecast is for the day to be dry with a few clouds floating around.
Team news:
South Africa: The hosts might stick with the same team as they would still want to give the youngsters a fair go, while keeping the seniors in there to help them along.
Sri Lanka: They must surely be fretting over their bowling and may look at their bench for options. In terms of pace options, there's Isuru Udana who has played seven T20Is in the past. They could also look at handing out a debut to Lakshan Sandakan, whose left-arm chinaman could thrive when the batsmen are going after him. Or for a more conventional option, there's left-arm finger spinner Sachith Pathirana too.
What they said:
"It was a dream debut. I am overjoyed. I have never heard people scream my name. It really was amazing for me. I have been working hard to get where I am and for the fans to acknowledge and support me like that, it was unreal for me." - Lungisani Ngidi, South Africa playerTeams:Sri Lanka (From): Niroshan Dickwella, Dhananjaya de Silva, Angelo Mathews(c), Thikshila de Silva, Seekkuge Prasanna, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal(w), Asela Gunaratne, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Isuru Udana, Danushka Gunathilaka, Sachith Pathirana, Lakshan SandakanSouth Africa (From): JJ Smuts, Heino Kuhn, Theunis de Bruyn, David Miller, Farhaan Behardien(c), Mangaliso Mosehle(w), Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Aaron Phangiso, Imran Tahir, Lungisani Ngidi, Reeza Hendricks, Dane Paterson
